Roundup® Linked to Cancer
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer-research-focused division of the World Health Organization (WHO), issued a report officially classifying the chemical compound glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” The report further states:
“Two large case-control studies of NHL [Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma] from Canada and the USA, and two case-control studies from Sweden reported statistically significant increased risks of NHL in association with exposure to glyphosate.”
Thousands of people across the United States have been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma after prolonged exposure to Roundup®. Though Roundup® is primarily used and handled by agricultural workers and gardeners, there is also potential for runoff to have developed chemical concentrations of farm workplaces, food, and drinking water. Therefore, if you or a loved one have experienced any symptoms of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, you should seek medical attention immediately.
The following symptoms often accompany Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma:
- Painless, swollen lymph nodes
- Abdominal pain or swelling
- Chest pain or trouble breathing
- Persistent Fatigue
- Night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
If you think you may have developed Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, do not wait to get diagnosed. This type of cancer is treatable with early detection.
Roundup® and Glyphosate Lawsuits
The Monsanto Company has maintained that Roundup® is safe to use for decades despite numerous studies having identified significant links between Roundup and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Hundreds of pending lawsuits against the Monsanto Company related to this chemical exist. They claim that the company failed to warn Roundup® users of the increased risk of developing Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
The following are two of the most notable lawsuits involving Roundup® weed killer. It is important to note that the Hardeman case was only the second Roundup® lawsuit (of thousands) to go to trial in the United States.
Notable Roundup® Cases
- In 2014, California school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. He later, aided by his attorney, filed a lawsuit against the Monsanto Company, alleging prolonged use of Roundup Pro® and Ranger Pro® glyphosate-based herbicides caused his cancer. In August 2018, the jury presented their verdict in favor of Johnson, awarding him $39 million in compensatory and $250 million in punitive damages, totaling $289 million. The award was later reduced to $78 million.
- In 2015, Edwin Hardeman was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Hardeman had used Roundup® weed killer for tending to his property for over two decades. Hardeman, aided by his attorney, filed a lawsuit against the Monsanto Company, and it was determined by the jury that both the weed killer was a “substantial factor” in causing Hardeman’s cancer and that Monsanto demonstrated negligence and should be held liable. In March 2019, the federal jury awarded Hardeman $5 million in compensatory and $75 million in punitive damages, totaling $80 million.
