Paraquat, a highly poisonous liquid weedkiller, was developed in the 1960s and has continued to grow in popularity among farmers and other farm workers as weeds have become more resistant to other products. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that Paraquat exposure leads to increased risk of Parkinson’s Disease.
According to the National Institutes of Health, Paraquat users are up to 2.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s than non-users. This has led to hundreds of lawsuits nationwide. As of April 2022, there were 982 ongoing Paraquat lawsuits across the country.
Research also concluded that exposure to Paraquat herbicide can cause prenatal neurodevelopmental toxicity that reflects Parkinson’s disease. This new information, released in September 2021, is highly significant in that it is the first research potentially linking Paraquat to prenatal health defects.
Despite its negative impact on public health, Paraquat usage is expected to continue to increase across the United States. In 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reapproved the continued use of the chemical for another 15 years, a decision that drew heavy criticism from environmental and public health organizations.
While Paraquat remains legal, the EPA has deemed it a restricted-use chemical, meaning only commercially licensed applicators can use the weedkiller.
